Critical Distance Visual Acuity
Assess your distance vision to determine whether you meet commercial driving vision standards, with or without corrective lenses.
FMCSA vision standards generally require commercial motor vehicle drivers to have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses, and at least 20/40 binocularly. We assess your visual acuity to help determine whether you meet the applicable federal standards.
Peripheral vision is essential for monitoring surrounding traffic, identifying potential hazards, and navigating lane changes safely. Federal vision standards generally require a horizontal field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian of each eye.
Recognizing traffic signal colors is an important part of commercial driving safety. We assess your ability to recognize red, green, and amber, helping identify potential color perception concerns relevant to your commercial driving medical qualification.
The Step-by-Step Clinical Journey
Our DOT vision evaluation is designed to provide a clear, efficient, and professional experience, helping commercial drivers understand their vision status and prepare for the medical certification process.
Standardized Distance Vision Testing
We begin by measuring your distance visual acuity using standardized vision charts. Testing considers your vision with your current corrective lenses, when applicable, and documents the results needed to assess your visual acuity against the relevant federal requirements.
Horizontal Field of Vision Evaluation
Next, we assess your peripheral vision in each eye to help determine whether your horizontal field of vision meets the applicable standards. Any findings that require further assessment can be addressed before proceeding with the medical certification process.
Color Vision Assessment & Documentation
We evaluate your ability to recognize relevant traffic signal colors and document your results. The findings can then be reviewed as part of your DOT medical examination, with any required certification completed by the appropriately qualified medical examiner.
